Pregnancy & Postpartum
Learn more about Pregnancy & Postpartum Depression at Sunstone Psychology Group.
The majority of people who seek mental health services are pregnant, recently pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
There is a critical need for a specialized approach to women’s mental well-being during these life stages.
The reproductive phase of a woman's life begins with menstruation and concludes at menopause. During this time, hormonal changes occur with each menstrual cycle, which can significantly influence mental health and result in a variety of challenges. Women may experience several mental health conditions throughout their reproductive years, including:
Anxiety can become debilitating for some individuals, leading to overwhelming stress and panic that interfere with daily functioning.
Depression is a chronic condition that impacts both mental and physical health, manifesting as persistent sadness, hopelessness, and social withdrawal.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), more severe than premenstrual syndrome (PMS), that typically presents symptoms the latter half of the menstrual cycle.
Perimenopausal Depression can manifest as emotional numbness, irritability, social withdrawal, tearfulness, low energy, and loss of interest in activities. Hormonal fluctuations may increase the risk of depression, especially in women no prior history. Symptoms develop gradually, as menses gradually lightens and ceases, leading women to view them as permanent changes rather than temporary issues.
Postpartum Depression (PPD) arises following childbirth and can range in severity, with symptoms including energy and challenges in bonding with the infant.
Engaging with a therapist can equip individuals with tools to modify their thought patterns. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is particularly beneficial for conditions such as PMDD and mental health concerns arising during fertility treatments.
The Association of American Medical Colleges reports that 20% women encounter mental health issues surrounding childbirth, yet many do not seek care, and many remain undiagnosed.
Our team of providers recognizes and addresses mild to moderate reproductive issues.

Infertility Counseling
Our professional team of infertility and reproductive therapists is committed to providing support during these challenging times, as many individuals seeking treatment did not foresee this in their journey to build a family. We acknowledge the emotional toll of infertility and recognize that treatment can be inherently stressful, even under optimal conditions. Additionally, we understand that numerous factors must be considered both prior to and throughout the treatment process. It would be a privilege to provide support.
